Boys are made of … bananas?

Surprising new research out of the UK is suggesting that what (and how much) you eat at conception influences the gender of your baby. And that eating bananas could help you conceive a boy.

According to a study from Oxford and Exeter Universities in England, consuming more calories, eating breakfast cereals and a wider range of nutrients including potassium-rich foods like bananas raised a woman’s odds of having a boy.

It sounds pretty out there - men’s sperm, of course, determines gender by providing either an X or Y chromosome. But the researchers say that certain nutrients or eating patterns might make women’s bodies more hospitable to carrying a male embryo. And that it could explain why male birth rates are on the decline in Westernized countries like the U.S. and the UK - because women in these fast-paced societies are skipping breakfast and eating less nutritioius meals overall.
